Assignment 3A- My First Business Adventure

After I served my time in the military, I decided to pursue my dreams of becoming a cosmetologist. I attended necessary training to prepare me for the state board to obtain my license. Once I complete the training and state board exam, I received my license. I had this great idea that I would be my own boss. So, I googled "How to start your own business". From there, I ordered business cards, posters,  got my Tax ID, and created the name for my business. It was called L and S Hair Care. I found a location and purchased necessary products to start rendering service to clients. I was excited about my new adventure. Anxious to be my very own boss.
The first couple of months started out really slow. So, I went to the malls and handed out flyers, gave posters to different companies so that I can get my name out in the streets. I heard about Groupon and decided to give them a shot. That's when the fun began. I had steady business and at times I had to turn people away because my book was too full. This lasted for almost a year. But I then realized that Groupon was really not the best setup for me and my business. Even though Groupon fed me clients, the profit I made off of one client was not enough. Furthermore, The clients were purchase the Groupon, yet wanted a miracle for the Groupon price. For example, The Groupon stated that for 39 dollars, you can receive a full color which typically cost over 65 dollars. When the client came in, she wanted highlights instead of the full color which was a lot more. She wanted it at the Groupon price of 39 dollars. I eventually canceled Groupon and just maintained the clients that I accumulated from Groupon, word of mouth, and Walk-ins.
From 2014-2016 I had my own business until, I was trying to buy a house. I wasn't bringing in enough revenue for the salon itself because I was in the beginning stages of my business. Most people suffer a loss in the beginning. With that being said, I got another job  to help compensate for lack in revenue. Months later, I let the business go because I didn't have the drive anymore. So, here I am now. Taking the classes at UF to better myself.
I enrolled into this class because it was a requirement for my degree program. I do hope that this class teach me necessary skills to be successful in the event I decide to try open my own business again.

  1. Really cool that we have someone in the class that already has some experience with starting a business! Hats off to you for pursuing what you want, and now you've got experience to make your next venture even better. The part about the clients wanting more for less is especially telling, as it reflects one of the biggest challenges for businesses that are just starting out.

Lastly, I don't know much about hair extensions, but the picture looks really good to me.

  2. Hi, Sici! I think it's awesome that you've already gone out and gotten first-hand experience in entrepreneurship, you're definitely ahead of most of us already. I'm sad to hear that Groupon didn't eventually end up working out. Do you think it's something that's a bit unfriendly to small businesses? When I think about my favorite local cafes and salons back home, the only discounts I ever received were personally done by the owner (nice folks!).
