13A- Reading Reflection
Grinding It Out: The
Making of McDonald’s, Ray Kroc
1) Before reading “Grinding it Out” I thought
that Ray Kroc was the person that invented McDonalds. I was surprised when I found
out that he didn’t invent it, he just grew the brand. I also didn’t know he
started his entrepreneur career with selling paper cups. While I admire Ray
Kroc’s drive for success even in his old age, I didn’t agree with his personal
marital affairs. He was dating a married woman.
2) Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and
failure? If so, what did they do about it? Ray encounter adversity with his
first business of selling paper cups. He Made a few bad decisions in business
career and suffered some failure before he made a hit with McDonalds.
3) Ray saw an opportunity with the McDonalds
brothers and jumped on it right away developing
his model and then expanding it into the largest fast food restaurant in the
nation.
4) I know that Ray liked the name McDonalds,
but wouldn’t you want to name your business after yourself or something
meaningful to you. Unless he did it this way to keep the original McDonalds
alive. I am confused about his thought process here.
5) If I could ask two questions, it would be:
What was so fancy about the name McDonalds
that you decided to keep it? If you had the opportunity to change something
about McDonalds setup or operations, what would you change?
6) I think Rays opinion of hard work is to keep
trying until something happens. Because he never gave up on the hustle. He
literally kept striving until he hit the jack pot with his successful business.
I agree! If you want to be successful you must
strive in every way possible.
I also read Grinding it Out and I was very intrigued by the fact that Mr. Kroc was so advanced in age before he even started getting involved in with the McDonald's brothers. However, I think he kept the name because they were the ones who came up with the menu for the restaurant and they had perfected the art of making a burger and fries in the time they all lived in. The only way for him to get the rights for the store was to keep them in the loop unfortunately. I did admire his hard work as well, however I also did not agree with him dating a married woman.
